Psych Pilot Review: "I laughed. I psyed."
In a time where the crime drama is king, USA’s new show attempts to put
a spin on a tested and true model. The show follows Sean Spencer, a
young man with a keen eye for detail who is accused of committing a
crime after he calls in a tip to the police. To get himself out of
trouble, he pretends to be a psychic and then gets a chance to help the
police solve a kidnapping.
The show is fun and clever in it’s set
up. James Roday (Rolling Kansas) is the epitome of the slacker youth
culture. His con seems harmless to the viewer’s because it is all just a
game to him. Dule Hill plays Burton “Gus” Guster, Spenser’s uptight best
friend. His straight-man status would seem tired if not for Hill’s
acting. Together Roday and Hill make the show.
That being said, Psych does have its
issues. Psych shouldn’t be judged simply by the pilot, but the show
could easily fall into the trap of trying to do too much in too little
time. On top of the standard crime drama fare, the show has to find time
to explore the falsity of Sean’s psychic powers and the dubious
relationship between Spencer and his father – the latter being the
biggest challenge.
The writer’s will have plenty of time
to clean up the show’s message in the first few episodes, and while I
can’t be sure of the show’s future, I’d say that psych has the potential
to be a very successful show. |
